Hammermen Memorial Stone
Deacon’s Visit To The Hammermen Memorial Stone At The Oakshaw Trinity High Churchyard
Deacon Brian Hunt visited the Oakshaw Trinity Churchyard (formerly the High Church) on a sunny spring day to catch up with the Society’s historic past. Brian is pictured at the memorial stone which was sculpted in 1776 to mark the internment ground owned by the society. The stone is in very good condition and clearly shows in the centre, the Crown and Hammer symbols of the Society. The stone reads:
The property of the Hammermen Society in Paisley, 1796
“To help the poor is our design in this our late erection;
This shall a testimony be of this our good intention”
The High Kirk, located in Oakshaw was completed in 1754, adding a significant feature to Paisley’s skyline, especially when the steeple was erected between 1767 and 1770. During that period the Paisley Hammermen Society was formed in 1760 and formally constituted by charter from Paisley Town Council in 1761.
